Recycling Project

Currently I am working on a "Texas Recycle" project. I am customizing 26 gallon (about 99 liters) cans. There is a daytime photo of one in my album. The logos will be lit at night, like an "exit" sign. I am going to try to recycle at the major events in the Austin area (Houston, San Antonio, Dallas are close enough...+/- 3 hour drive). The U.K. is probably similar to America in not recycling at concerts, expos and the like. If that statement is true I think some of y'all should take on the project as well.

Matt

Also, you will want to coordinate the recycling well in advance (at least 6 months methinks).

join the army...oh really...suppot war?

it bothers me how much publicity there is in regards to recruting people for the forces -- especially the army -- whether its an add you see in the paper, on TV, or an army kiosk in your local shopping mall. is there no counter reaction. do we not think!

do we not have a conscience?

maybe there is a counter reaction and existing movments that target the issue directly campaigning against army recruitment amoungst things; but not much i am aware of. please inform me. how much of an issue is it in the uk?

how is it that we can be so anti-war, rally agianst it, be against the irac situation ect..and yet liberally just except all the public propaganda and advetisments telling us to join the army? what a good career move your can make. hey there's plenty of adventure, excitement. you get a steady income, stability ect..(deliberate sarcasm). do we except this as normal? maybe because we have got so use to the propaganda we have become numb to the real issues at hand.

the underlying principle of the army is war ain't peace. its about destroying others thru forceful means and ultimatly the worst case scenario is...killing...as harsh as it may sound; and many war victims are innocent civilians.

where's your/our conscience?

do we not think and question?yes there can be plenty of adenventure and excitement. you may even end crawling around in the dirt in a foreign country (travel as well) blindly shooting a rifle at other you know absolutely nothing about, and/or dodging bullets from them. yes, a good career move indeed. and if you end up in an army office, or with a spanner in your hand fixing plane whatever.., you still support war because because you still support it just as much as somene holding a rifle.

lets think!

let me first say that i was born in this country, grew up in south africa and have been living in the uk for the last 7 years. in south africa, although the army was compulsory at one time, but we had big 'end consciption' campaigns, we used to boycott this and that . some people used to even go oversees or end up in prison for a period to avoid the army to make their stament... war is wrong.

let me ask you again...are you anti-war? really ? your thoughts

peace

Howdy,
I'm a writer from Tennessee, which may seem to sort of cancel one another out in some people's minds; but most of us are quite literate, if there's not a backlash from the DNA due to inbreeding. I saw where there were some Dave Davies and Kinks fans in this trybe, and that caught my attention. I saw them in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1982, and they were awesome.

free and easy way to help homeless children

Please use www.railwaychildren-friends.com/email.asp as a search engine for your internet searches and you'll raise a massive 10p per search! please set it as your homepage for ease of use and start raising money today ;)

You can have a snoop on the charities efforts at www.railwaychildren.org.uk

They are mainly a preventative charity which in terms of being a street child can mean the difference between a world of pain and heartache and a life worth living. Railway children endeavour to meet runaway children before pimps, pushers or abusers do. They are even getting to help the kids in Siberia who are living in the sewers.

80% of their money goes straight to the projects, 17% fundraising, 3% admin etc, so they are a 'fair-enough-trade' charity.

10p a search is phenomenal and it means that the average amount spent per child -£44- will take 440 searches...its fairly usual for me to search 20 items per evening, so that means in 22 evenings that ground level support for a child is reached. www.railwaychildren-friends.com/email.asp

There is a snag with the search page which is that on entering a search it automatically redirects to a normal search page for the results. So inorder that you keep raising money for the charity you have to go back to the root page with the picture of the child and the green bits for each new search subject to raise another all important 10p.

Thanks very much for your efforts and please do enjoy your days. Also if there are any forums that you can forward this message or indeed your own personal email contacts please do send this on, more the better. ;) *

Has an email ever changed your life? Lets do that help for the ones who don't have internet access or in alot of cases protection or food

Why I think Polls are worthless

Because there is no way you can convince me that people in the UK are this fucking stupid.

LONDON (Reuters) - Nearly one in three Britons think that if a woman jumps up and down, washes or urinates immediately after sex, she can prevent pregnancy, a survey revealed Monday.
It was one of a string of revelations in the survey carried out by the Family Planning Association (fpa) at the start of Contraceptive Awareness Week.
They reveal "widespread confusion and misunderstanding" about some of the basic facts, said the fpa, which has called for improved sex and relationships education in schools.
"In today's sexualized society, we are bombarded with a multitude of sexual imagery and messages," said Anne Weyman, chief executive of fpa.
"Nevertheless, providing people with the information and skills they need to make positive choices about their health and lives is not considered a priority."
One in five pregnancies currently ends in abortion, the fpa said.
The survey showed that half the 500 people questioned did not know that a woman's most fertile time is between 10 and 16 days before her next period.
The poll, carried out by Gfk NOP, also revealed that 89 percent of respondents were unaware that it is possible for sperm to live inside a woman's body for up to seven days.
Nearly 25 percent incorrectly thought that the fluid a man produces before he ejaculates does not contain sperm.
Most blamed their ignorance on a lack of sex education at school, with 18 percent of the 18 to 65-year-olds questioned saying they never had any such lessons.
"None of us is born with the facts about sex and reproduction -- we are taught them," Weyman added.
"If this doesn't happen, myths start getting into circulation and people end up not being able to tell fact from fiction.
"If contraception isn't used or if it fails, instead of seeking professional help and advice people may take action that is completely ineffective in preventing a pregnancy."

Hurrah we've got snow. The seven year old trapped inside me is getting all dissy and excited with the white powdery stuff.

And just so our foreign friends can have a laugh, two days of snow and the country grinds to a halt under headlines of transport problems and the such like.

Still the schools are shut, there are snowmen appearing along my street and I'm off to find a steep hill...

I was so gutted when they took it off the air - URGH...how stuff like Coronation Street continues ( crap ) for all these years...
Or even East Enders ....gawd almighty.

http://infowars.net/articles/january2007/240107Freedom.htm

This is a poll of English people. You guys already live in a world where your so called civil rights can be suspended any time with no notice. You guys have civil rights laws and not a Constitution.

I’d like to see the same poll taken here in the States.

Some of your results :
*******• 81% think that following people suspected of involvement with terrorism, tapping their phones and opening their mail is ‘a price worth paying’. *********

That is so scary it is sobering.

*********• 80% think that putting people suspected of involvement with terrorism under special rules – which would mean that they could be electronically tagged, prevented from going to certain places or prevented from leaving their homes at certain times – is ‘a price worth paying’. ***************

That is so scary it is sobering.

************• 79% think that allowing the police to detain people for more than a week or so without charge if the police suspect them of involvement in terrorism is ‘a price worth paying’. ************

That is so scary it is sobering.

**********• 71% think that having compulsory identity cards for all adults is ‘a price worth paying’.***********

As much as I dislike the idea I can almost sort of understand it.

*********• 22% think that torturing terror suspects in British jails to get information, if it is that the only way the information can be obtained, think this is ‘a price worth paying’. ************

I have a lot of ambivalence about torture. Most of it is similar in logic to my objections to the Death Penalty - - what if you are wrong & do I want my government engaged in that conduct?

**********• 35% think that banning certain peaceful protests and demonstrations is ‘a price worth paying’. *********

That is so scary it is sobering.

********• 45% think that denying the right to a trial by jury to people charged with a terrorist-related crime is ‘a price worth paying’. **********

That is so scary it is sobering.

*********• 22% think that ‘during war it is acceptable for the armed forces to torture people’.**********

I have a lot of ambivalence about torture. Most of it is similar in logic to my objections to the Death Penalty - - what if you are wrong & do I want my government engaged in that conduct?

Disney Channel needs kids age 8-14 who were born in Great Britain, and now live in the United States, to star in a brand new Disney Channel TV show! The key is they still have to have their British Accents! When picked, they will be put on a well-compensated contract with Disney Channel and flown in to Los Angeles every time we record a show. The show will air in the United States and around the world on Disney Channel. Please contact David Glasgal at 323-464-6789 x208 or send pictures and info to david@7ate9.com Thank you.

UK 911 Evidence Base just launched

911 Evidence Base exists in the hope that it may bring some clarity to the world of "911 Truth". Through utilizing a simple process, of submitting evidence which if then accepted for discussion and if proven to be accurate is then added to the archive, we hope to compile a useful resource.

As time passes the chance that evidence will become blurred and distorted is a very real possibility. We can already see this happening with the large amount of airbrushed photos and videos which are appearing on the web. Therefore the creation of archived evidence based reports/articles becomes an imperative.

There are those that through deception and blatant lies strive to discredit the "911 Truth Movement". It therefore becomes the duty of those that can see beyond the propaganda and fiction of the official 911 conspiracy theory to speak out. The official story which states that 19 terrorists armed with box cutters flew two jumbo jets into the twin towers of the world trade center resulting in their collapse is not believed by many. This official story in many instances does not stand up to scrutiny and many people are demanding a more thorough investigation of the events surrounding 911.

The aim of this forum is therefore to stand with the thousands of other websites and millions of people around the world that are demanding an independent and international investigation into the events of 911.

The site is here: www.911evidencebase.co.uk

Health drive hitting pie eaters

What's a pie eater to do?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/6175726.stm

Competitors in the world championship, held at Harry's Bar in Wigan, used to gobble up as many meat and potato pies as they could in three minutes.

But the new champion will be the pie eater who can put away a single pie in the shortest time - and in 2006 there is even a vegetarian option.

Organisers say they are recognising the government's drive to cut obesity.

But some competitors are unhappy with the changes to the competition, held annually at the bar in Wallgate.

Dave Smyth, 48, from Hindley, won the first contest in 1992 when he ate four pies in three minutes.

He said: "This contest has always been about savouring as many pies as possible over a three-minute period, not sprinting through a few mouthfuls of a single pie.

"They've taken things too far this year pies are supposed to be meat and potato and anything else just isn't normal."

Organiser Tony Callaghan, owner of Harry's Bar, indicated that the competition had to move with the times.

"I realise it may be controversial, but this is the way forward for pie-eating at this level," said Mr Callaghan.

"It will make for an exciting sporting spectacle, whilst also doffing its cap to government guidelines on obesity."

He said the introduction of a separate vegetarian competition came after "relentless pressure" from the Vegetarian Society.

Pie-eaters

The pies consumed at the contest have to meet strict criteria.

Pies must have a diameter of 12cm (4.7ins) with a depth of 3.5cm (1.4ins) - with a consistency neither too runny nor crumbly.

Vegetarian pie-eaters in the competition will be allowed to eat a slightly smaller version because of its more glutinous content.

"We will not stop competitors from entering both championships - so there is every possibility we will have a double world champion for the first time," Mr Callaghan added.

The "pie-eater" term given to Wiganers dates back to the 1920s, when miners in the town were forced back to work before the end of a strike.

As a result they were said to have eaten "humble pie".

The World Pie Eating Championship takes place at Harry's Bar on 16 December.

Here's a senario: Let's say you wake up on emorning and discover that the Polar ice caps have indeed melted and England, being close to the Pole, is one of the first countries to be overwhelmed by it and covered up in water, where else would you then wish to relocate you and your family to?

My first Halloween party in the UK!!

Hi everyone.

I have been so inactive on this site so I thought I would reach out. Yes yes, who the heck am I anyway? Well, after being a Tribe.net member for a number of years now and going through some trials and tribulations I am back.
I am Canadian and have been living in London for the last year. I know few of you. That sucks. Its my fault. I just needed the time to get my life in order and being online was not easy.
So whats the deal?
Well, I am throwing a Halloween party and want you to come. Yes, my Tribe friends and those of you who don't know me yet. Why not, right? There are always these get togethers I hear about on here. I figured, I'll just have one at my house. I am leaving this invitation open to you all. I will leave the details here but I hope for the sake of meeting more people and having a good time, you will come. I have so far invited many work friends and friends I have made in the last year including those friends of theirs. Should be a good one.

The Date: October 28th (Saturday night)
Time: Sometime after 6pm
I live in Finsbury Park. Its on the Victoria and Piccadilly tube lines north zone 2.
Im at 15A Finsbury Park Road. To find it you can just go into www.streetmap.co.uk and type in my postal code. N4 2LA
It will be a 3 floor one backyard party. You MUST have a costume. It seems my friends have also arranged 2 dj's to come and perform. This detail I will confirm for any of you who really need to know but there will be much music there anyway.
It is a BYO-Whatever makes you dance and smile but not stupid and violent party.

So, please bring yourselves, your friends, and your good spirits. If you need to get hold of me then just give me a ring: 07799826628

Bye for now my friends.
Taner

I am a Native American who will be visiting the UK over the Winter Solstice and am destined to be at Stonehenge for ceremony.
My understanding is that it is "closed" during that period. However I find it hard to beleive that someone is not doing ceremony there during these shifting and important times. Feel free to send me a private note to share or ask more information.
Thank You

train delays

At least this is a much more credible reason than being told there are "leaves on the track."

LONDON - A landslide blocked the path of a rush-hour train in London Thursday, forcing the evacuation of 600 subway passengers, transport officials said.

There were no injuries and the train did not derail, Transport for London said.

The train made an emergency stop when tons of earth slipped from an embankment and clogged tracks, it said.

The service was carrying 600 passengers from London's main Heathrow airport and was traveling on an above ground section of London's subway when it made contact with the landslide and came to an abrupt halt.

Three to four tons of debris ended up on the track, Transport for London said.
Judge orders former lawman jailed
By BY JAMIE SATTERFIELD, satterfield@knews.com
February 22, 2005
A federal judge today ordered former Campbell County narcotics investigator Gerald David Webber to jail until his sentencing in May for beating and torturing a drug dealer.
Webber, 40, answered U.S. District Court Judge Tom Varlan's questions but stood ramrod straight and quiet for most of the 30-minute hearing.
Webber is one of five former Campbell County lawmen charged with federal civil rights violations of Lester Eugene Siler, 42, of the White Oak community.
He was the first to appear in court; three others are due in court later this week. The fifth is yet to be scheduled.
They are charged with handcuffing and torturing Siler for two hours on July 8, 2004, demanding his drugs and money.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Atchley said none of the men deserved -- under federal law -- their freedom and asked Varlan to incarcerate them after their pleas.
Varlan agreed and ordered Webber to be taken into custody immediately. He is to be sentenced May 23.
Siler and members of his family were present in the courtroom.
Siler's attorneys said they were pleased with the outcome and will probably file a lawsuit within the next 30 days.
Webber, who headed narcotics investigations for Campbell County and is accused of being the ringleader in the alleged torture, pleaded guilty to an information charging him with conspiracy to violate Siler's civil rights.
Samuel Franklin, 42, a veteran detective at the agency and head of its D.A.R.E. program, is scheduled to plead guilty Wednesday, court records show. Rookie Deputy Joshua Monday, 24, and process server Shayne Green, 35, are expected to plead guilty Thursday, according to records.
The four lawmen and part-time process server William Carroll, 26, were named in federal informations filed earlier this month in U.S. District Court. They are accused of beating and torturing Siler after showing up at his house to serve a violation of probation warrant.
Part of the alleged attack was captured on an audiotape after Siler's wife, Jenny, stashed a tape recorder in the kitchen. An FBI transcript of the tape revealed in chilling detail how Siler was threatened, beaten and tortured, with deputies demanding two things from him: that he sign a form to show he agreed for his house to be searched and that he turn over to them all his cash and drugs.
Attorneys for Webber and Franklin filed motions asking Varlan to allow their clients to remain free pending sentencing hearings.
An attorney for Monday, who is not charged in the conspiracy but instead is accused of a separate count of pointing a gun at Siler and threatening to shoot him during Siler's ordeal, also wants his client freed until he is sentenced.
Attorney Lee Asbury argued in his motion that Webber, who lives in Anderson County, "has no prior criminal record" and "has never missed or been late for an appointment with the U.S. Attorney."
Webber, Asbury insisted, should be allowed his freedom because "he has at all times cooperated with the United States Attorney, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Department of Justice."
Asbury's motion does not note, however, that Webber is accused in state court charges of lying to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in that agency's initial investigation of the incident.
Green, Monday and Franklin also are charged in state court with perjury. The four also face charges in Campbell County Criminal Court of official oppression. District Attorney General Paul Phillips has said state court charges likely will be dropped if the men wind up imprisoned in the federal case. Federal penalties are higher than any that might be handed out in state court, he has said.
Franklin's attorney, Andrew S. Roskind, contends Franklin only went to Siler's house at the request of Webber. Franklin, Roskind says, asked Siler's wife and son to leave the house and, along with the other four lawmen, demanded Siler sign the consent form.
"After making the request, Mr. Franklin threatened Mr. Siler with the use of a slapjack and breaking Mr. Siler's fingers," Roskind wrote. "Mr. Franklin never carried through with either threat nor did he allow one of the other four ... to use his slapjack or break Mr. Siler's fingers.
"Unfortunately and regrettably, although Mr. Franklin never physically harmed Mr. Siler, he failed to stop the other individuals from inflicting further ... harm and injury," Roskind continued.
Roskind contends in his motion that Franklin has served both Campbell County and his country -- he was once in the military -- admirably and deserves freedom pending sentencing because of that.
Monday's attorney, Dennis Francis, writes that his client has no prior criminal history and would agree to be electronically monitored if allowed to remain free.
Atchley counters that none of the men are entitled to freedom.
All, he wrote, will plead guilty to a "crime of violence" for which federal law requires immediate detention. The only exceptions to that law, Atchley noted, would come if the case against them was weak or the lawmen were likely to receive probation.
"The exceptions do not apply," Atchley wrote, indicating that he will indeed seek prison terms for the men.
As for Franklin, Atchley contends Franklin's service to Campbell County and the military does not set him apart from the garden-variety criminal.
"Even painting the defendant's employment history and military service in the best possible light, it seems a bit of a stretch to state that these make his personal character out of the ordinary, uncommon and rare," Atchley wrote.

Central Flats - Accomodation, ethics?

Hi

Has anyone on here dealt with a company called central flats? They have flats advertised all over the show. So I call them to enquire about viewing. Now I'm not sure but think I smell a rat a big one! They are advertising flats in areas well below the general market price, you call and they want £69 up front to show you flats for up to 3 months. I told them I have no problem paying a finders fee should they have something available. The man was rude and said this is how we work and put the phone down. What gaurantee do i have once paying my money zero, all of a sudden all the flats in my budget could dissapear amazingly.

Am I wrong do they make good on all there big talk? Anyone have personal experience finding a flat through them?

Just a word of warning to people new to London beware of people trying to cash in on your hard earned moola.

Nothing fucks with Hippos. Except for other Hippos.

I've seen a Hippo floss his teeth on a crocodiles tail. And the crocodile does like .....nothing. Seriously. A Hippo will make anything its bitch. And you know the beautiful irony about Hippos? It's the fact that they look like mother nature's very own down syndrome kids.

That's the bit that fools most people.

What other animals do you think are hard enough to mix it with a Hippo?

Up-date on our family Tribe (April 2006)

Hi all, I wanted to help give you more info about what we've done and what we expect to do going forward:

We're trying to get our expenses closer to our revenue. Most companies need to do this. Start-ups generally have some time but it is the responsible thing to do after almost 3 years of heavy product and engineering investment. Our board, investors and management believe this was the best course of action. So, we reduced marketing spend and unfortunately also had to reduce our staff.

I know my level of commitment to members hasn't changed. We plan to continue providing this great service and we're hoping to make some of the changes you've all requested regarding color schemes, new member icon, and home page customization. Unfortunately it will take some time to figure out what that schedule is but we want to move quickly for you.

And, I know some questions will arise around our status. So, what I can say is: most venture-funded companies are open to acquisition or other partnerships that can help the reach their goals. We'll pursue any and all opportunities that will allow us to continue Tribe for you.

And, regarding our reorganization: I don't think it is fair or right to talk about specific empolyees that were let go. Privacy is an important issue to me, to Tribe, and to the community. Please respect that if someone doesn't want to talk about it.

All our employees, past and present put huge amounts of effort into Tribe and had huge contributions. I don't think we could have made this lasting community (and our members obvious committment) without them. These are super talented people who deserve our thanks. And for their future jobs they deserve only the best positions at the best companies. I'm more than saddened by all this and hope that there will be light at the end of the tunnel.

As for revenue issues: We continue to make decent revenue. Given that we initially wanted to be like Craig's List and not have ads (and charge for listings) we've made huge strides in the advertising arena with limited resources after the first year of no ads.

I thank every one of your for participating in this tribe and others, on your profiles, in your homepages, etc. creating content and consuming content. You proved that member/organic generated content is valuable. You also deserve our thanks and are not just part but an integral reason we've gotten as far as we have.

I hope you'll continue participate in tribe discussions, sharing your viewpoints and passions, post to your profiles, write and read reviews, use our classifieds and create and promote your listings. This site for you. It always has been--even if we don't say it enough, thank you enough or show it enough. We'll get there. We're all trying. So, keep emailing me your thoughts and comments.

Sorry this was so long-winded. I just don't have a succint way to tell you all how much you, our members, matter to us, how much all our past and present employees matter to us, and that I hope and will work to the bone to ensure we can continue Tribe.

(And, it would help just a little if you invite a few friends and click on a banner or Google ad now and again!)

[I've known about this for a little while and have been trying to work out quite how to put it. This really, actually, genuinely matters. Learn everything you can about it]

Taken from Oldmotherchaos on LJ
-------------------------------

Look, I'm often a bit ranty. I admit that, and you almost certainly know it and make allowance. I overplay my rhetoric for dramatic effect from time to time -- although I've never altered a fact or statistic -- and I certainly tend to assume the worst rather than the best, particularly when I'm talking about our Lords and Masters and their motivations.

I'm making the point because I need you to put that aside for a moment.
For once, I'm not grandstanding.
This is deadly serious.

First of all, ask yourself _carefully_: Do you clearly remember the details of how Hitler got himself legally appointed as Dictator of Germany?
The Reichstag Fire?
The mass-media promotion of the Communist Threat?
The Enabling Act?

If you're in the least bit fuzzy, go have a quick look at Wikipedia right now. Please. It's worth it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enabling_Act#Passing_of_the_Enabling_Act

All done? OK.

Now, I'd like to introduce you to the tediously-named Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill. You can find it here on the UK Government website: http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200506/cmbills/111/06111.1-4.html

You probably haven't heard of it before, unless you're a habitual political activist. You should have, though. The Bill had its second reading in the House of Commons this week, where just a handful of MPs barely got the chance to debate it. It's now winding its way through towards quietly becoming a hideous turning point.

The Bill is actually written rather simply, for a piece of law. It's not very long. Have a look for yourself.

Under the terms of the Bill, a Cabinet Minster may alter any piece of UK legislation -- or draft an entirely new piece -- by issuing an "Order". That's right. The Bill grants Ministers the power to pass or amend laws almost as they see fit.

There are some restrictions, of course. There are a few trivial content restrictions. The Minister has to be personally satisfied that the Order is in line with what party policy hopes to achieve, for example. The Minister also has to accept that an Order cannot be used to remove a freedom which members of the public could reasonably expect to retain -- with the Minister deciding what reasonable expectations are, of course. New crimes created by Orders cannot have punishments more severe than two years imprisonment without trial, although of course multiple infringements can always be given to be served one after another.

The key defence though is that an Order has to be open to ratification by existing Parliament processes. It has to be voted into effect by Parliament.
Phew.
It's OK after all...

...or is it?

The structure of Parliament and existing process means that whilst in theory the Bill would allow Parliament a vote on any given Order -- NOTE _not_ a debate; _not_ a change to amend; _not_ multiple readings; _not_ all the other usual structure of the government process, just a vote -- it would also be possible for Orders to come through Select Committees: in other words, to be rubber-stamped by Minister-selected groups of MPs.

Make no mistake. This Bill takes Parliament out of Government almost entirely -- something Blair is desperate to achieve, as he is currently having a terrible time fighting his parliament. Saner and wiser heads than mine are calling this the Abolition of Parliament Act. The media have been very, very, VERY quiet about this, which is frightening. There are a few articles, buried in the back of major papers and magazines:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,1072-2049791,00.html
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,21129-2040625,00.html
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,59-2042165,00.html
http://politics.guardian.co.uk/constitution/story/0,,1715467,00.html
http://politics.guardian.co.uk/constitution/comment/0,,1724047,00.html

Oh, in case you were wondering, the Bill allows for Orders to bind the Crown, so the Monarchy is no defense.

"Best" of all, the Bill can even be used to amend itself. So the idea of, oh, say, removing the requirement for Parliament to have the option to strike an Order down could be passed through Select Committee as one recommendation in a gargantuan, bland and otherwise mildly beneficial report on something really boring -- say giving MPs another pay rise -- and an Order implementing the report could be slipped through quietly late one night when only a handful of MPs are about. Wham. Suddenly, Ministers would have the power to pass any law they saw fit without debate, notice or redress, all nice and legal and contitutional and unavoidable. (This is the "Indian Rope Trick" that a couple of the news reports mention).

When the bill was first introduced, Ministers promised it wouldn't be used for anything controversial, just for streamlining existing laws relating to business. This week, they were down to saying it wouldn't be used to do anything extremely controversial -- and even that tiny safeguard is being refused admission to the law. Already they're getting the bit between their teeth, and it isn't even passed yet.

If you don't find this terrifying, I suggest you read some of the other Constitution articles and links from the news sources above, go back to Wikipedia and read more about Hitler, or go read some current affairs sites regarding Iran, Iraq, "Terrorism", "Pedophilia", modern Surveillance, and the removal of rights to political protest in recent years.

Then ask yourself -- if someone in the modern world truly wanted to take over, and had studied 20th century history, and knew where the Bolsheviks and the Nazis had gone right AND where they'd gone wrong; someone very clever and very manipulative; someone who knew how to avoid spooking the herd; who knew how to manipulate the media; who truly believed He knew what was best for everyone -- what sort of strategy would such a person take, knowing that the hysteria that swept the Nazis through would ring alarm bells this time round? OK, I admit it, this paragraph is assuming the worst. But please, think. There is no possible justification for this power grab. Can you truly afford to risk assuming the best -- and of our politicians, no less -- on this one?

Note to UK Residents: You can get a template letter to send to your MP from some activist types here http://www.hoojum.com/LARRB/LARRB.html

Please. Make use of it right now. Please.

Note to Non-UK Residents: You know how Hollywood always casts Brits as the sly, manipulative villains who catch everyone by surprise by not being as cultured as they sounded? Now you know why. Do not assume you are safe. If our lot get away with this, your lot will follow suit faster than you can say "Bill of No Rights".

Note to everyone: This is fucking important. Please feel free to do whatever you want with any or all of this text, including link it, copy it, blog it, post it, paste it, stick it, stuff it or T-shirt it.

Who was the greatest American?

I can’t make up my mind between Ronald McDonald or Jesus Christ.

Yeah, yeah .....I know Christ wasn’t technically born in America .....but that's only because it hadn’t been invented then. I’m pretty certain that when he comes back, it’ll be somewhere in Texas or Oklahoma. I mean can you really see him coming back somewhere where there's lots of free thinking, flakey liberals like France or Scandinavia?

Jesus is practically a naturalised American.

Afterall he always takes their side when there’s a war (even Tony Blair knows that) and he is forever speaking personally to their President. And he always sends them a stern reminder of when to behave themselves, like Hurricane Katrina, AIDS or Michael Moore. Plus, he inspires the people in their educational system to realise that creationism is “proper science”. Jesus is always there for America. A solid ally in the face of those Satan worshippers, Muslims and Canadians.

And then there’s Ronald McDonald. If Jesus Christ is the American getting his head down in the back office organising stuff, Mr McDonald is the ambassador to the rest of the world, going out and being nice to everyone. He embodies what America is abroad and is largely to thank for all that wholesome and scrumptious food being widely available.

He’s also helped us to no longer have to teach our kids to be wary of grown men dressed as clowns flouncing up to them and offering them free hamburgers in public places. He has done much, on so many levels, for the family unit everywhere ...that I think you’ll agree is indisputable.

He is also is a reminder of America’s power …because no other country on the planet can eat as much of that food as them. Daily. And before Ronald McDonald came along with his nutritious menus, nobody fully realised that chicken didn’t actually need to have much chicken in it for it to be delicious. Ronald McDonald is the guv’nor.

Who do you think is the greatest American? Apart from Hunter S Thompson and Bill Hicks obviously.

Not a subject one would expect to see in this tribe..animals...especially wild ones like badgers.
i used to run a badger field study centre on Dartmoor many, many years ago & now the subject of badgers & bTB (Bovine TB) has risen to the surface savagely again.
I feel so sad that both farmers & animal welfare organisations are still locked in mortal combat, despite the spending of 40 million on trying to prove that badgers are the main culprits of bTB amongst cattle.
Yet...despite this no-one seems to be pointing to the government for bad farming advice 7 encouragement of heavy productions of cattle in this country..This is after all BOVINE TB & not meles meles (badger) TB...it is carried by many other animals that have contact with cattle.....farming needs to change its attitude to mass farming for profit & concentrate more on aspects of conservation which flows with our natural wildlife...& also making it a viable alternative.....there are many examples of farmers now...who do show that both conservation & farming profits can work together...surely it is this road we should be following...as responsible `managers` of the land we live in?

Americana, rockabilly, roots, country, cowgirl/boys - Brits doing or liking or loathing

Anyone else in London or UK doing or liking these?

Just how big is the Americana scene or new wave(??) of rockabilly/roots/alt.country/westernia in the UK? Anybody else feeling that there's growing or renewed interest here in spite of a fairly general anti- feeling surrounding US/Iraq/Iran/Afghanistan situation and misgivings about 'cultural imperialism' etc

Maybe a bit heavy kinda topic on a rainy Sunday morning, but I got to thinking about this while listening to an alt country web radio station while browsing through tribes postings from 'Lefties who like country', catching up on newsletter reading (the fuss about "Brokeback Mountain", especially) and hearing from some Goth friends in Dorset who are also into artists such as Shawn Harvey, Bonnie Prince Billy and The Handsome Family - and Nine Inch Nails (Some cultural crossovers there!) Gothabilly, anyone? Or does that sound too much like an advertising bod's next big idea for a genre that can be manufactured and marketed for our consumption?

Not entirely silly question: If there is Americana (e.g. stuff mentioned above), is there Canadiana?

OK - g'night now

Hello all!

I'm looking for a guitar player who could teach me once a week... Looked on the Craigs list but didn't find anything fantastic. Can anyone recommend a good guitar teacher or school in London? I play beginner electric :) Please reply directly to my tribe mail! Thank you.

We flood Wales (useless bloody place) and use the hydroelectric power to drive gigantic propellers based on the south coast. We ram America with Scotland (They won't notice) and the parachute regiment, dressed as pirates, invades and loots New York. We take off with the valuables for the Bahamas and live out the rest of our lives as a rogue state pirate nation.

Who's with me?

Yarr!

Do they hate us because - - - Could it be intolerance?

Do they hate us because of what we are, or because of what they are, or is it little more than the fact that we are so very different?
I think it?s the differences.
I think it?s about the differences in process too.
For some reason Europeans tend to have no tolerance at all for anyone with differences in process. That is weird for a people who want so very much to be seen as inclusive and multicultural. They are intolerant and exclusionary where it suits them?

The Europeans seem to be angry that for much of the last century they've been dependent on a country they consider inferior. Isn?t that snobbery?

For the USA process is the means of getting there. In Europe the process seems the end itself.

The USA is --------------------------------------------------- Europe is
In a hurry. --------------------------------------------------- Willing to wait.
Use Win/Lose Process ------------------------------------- Distrusts Win/Lose
Have principled debate. ---------------------------------- Avoids principled debate.
UN Res 1441 means OBEY or DIE ------------------It means lets talk some more.
Laws are enforced ------------------------------------------ Laws are guidelines
Unilateralist ----------------------------------------------------- Consensus oriented
Capitalist to exclusion of socialism------------- Socialist to exclusion of capitalism
Pro National Identity ------------------------------------ Opposed to national identity
Trust in self ----------------------------------------------- trust in the UN and EU
Militarist -------------------------------------------------------------------- Pacifist
War can be a solution to Evil ----------------------------- Any Evil is better than war.
Relies on objective standards ------------------------ Eschews objective standards
Holds to moral absolutes ----------------------------------- Disdains moral absolutes

That is such a short list.
There are similarities a plenty but the diufferences - oh damn the differences.
Does Europe hate the USA because of the differences?
A Tropical Rain Forest Event

Hello,

I’m letting all of the tribes know about a regional event coming up soon – Rebirth. Burning Man, but rather than radical desert survival – radical tropical rain forest survival. Details of the event can be found here:

http://www.kapilina.org/bigisland/rebirth2006.html

Hawaii… Fire spinning capital of the world… Big Island… Hot tub ponds heated by thermal vents… Black Sand Beaches… LAVA… REAL LAVA! And a Burning Man regional event.

I’ve tried to figure out how to reduce costs as much as possible for everyone coming over from the mainland (if you can think of anyother suggestions please post):

Rideshare thread from the airport to puna here:

Again if you know cheaper means please repost. See you all there!

Just a thought, this being a UK sort of tribe and all.
I'm sick of talking about America and its flaws, it makes me sound like a UK or European patriot - which I'm not, it's just the lesser of several 'evils'.

So, let's talk about Britain shall we?

Anyone?
